History

Matsubara Shrine in Matsubara-cho, Kagoshima City is said to have been founded in 1587 (Tensho 15), amid the turbulent period of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's pacification of Kyushu. The principal deity enshrined here is Sugawara Michizane, the patron of scholarship and learning. Under the protection of the Satsuma domain during the Edo period, the shrine flourished as a spiritual center befitting the domain's reverence for education. It continues to welcome worshippers today, especially students seeking divine favor during examination season.
