Agatai Jinja is enshrined in Chuo Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and venerates the Edo-period National Learning scholar Kamo no Mabuchi as its principal deity. Mabuchi was a leading figure in kokugaku (National Learning) born in Hamamatsu, and is deeply cherished by the local community. The name Agatai derives from his honorific title Agatai no Ushi. The shrine is said to have been established after the Meiji era to honor his achievements, and is fervently revered by students and those aspiring to literary pursuits as a deity of scholarship.
