History

Byakko

Oyama Afuri Jinja is an ancient shrine revered since ancient times as a sacred site for mountain worship, and is recorded in the Kojiki. With its main sanctuary at the summit of Mt. Oyama and a secondary shrine on the slopes, it has long drawn the faith of people throughout the Kanto region as a deity of rain. During the Edo period, the 'Oyama Pilgrimage' made the shrine beloved by common people, and it became a major sacred site attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims annually. Mt. Oyama is also known by the alternate name 'Amefuri-yama' (rain-falling mountain), and its deity is deeply revered as a bringer of rain essential to agriculture. It stands as a sacred place where visitors offer gratitude for nature's blessings while enjoying the magnificent views overlooking Sagami Bay.
