History

Byakko

Unbe-ji, standing atop a mountain over 900 meters high in Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, is the sixty-sixth station of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage and is also called "Shikoku Koya," a sacred pilgrimage site. Truly a heavenly sanctuary dwelling at the edge of the clouds. This venerable ancient temple is said to have been where Kobo Daishi engaged in practice at age sixteen, and is now accessible by ropeway as well. The view from the mountain summit is magnificent, overlooking the Sanuki Plain and even the Seto Inland Sea. In this sacred place near heaven, one's spirit becomes light and buoyant.
