History

Byakko

Shoon-ji, a Soto Zen temple in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai, bears the mountain name Goho-zan and enshrines Shakyamuni as its principal image. Founded in the Kansho era (1461-1466) by Date Mochimune, the 11th lord of the Date clan, it later became the family temple of his son Narimune. Following Date Masamune's founding of Sendai in 1602, the temple relocated to its current site, growing to oversee 36 sub-temples. A pillar of Zen practice in Sendai, it continues to memorialize the spirits of the Date domain. It is also the 23rd site of the Sendai 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
