History

Byakko

Kureha Shrine is located in Muromachi, Ikeda, Osaka, and enshrines Kureha-hime-no-mikoto, the ancestral goddess of weaving brought from the kingdom of Wu in ancient China. According to tradition, during the reign of Emperor Ojin, Achiki and his son brought back four sisters from Wu, of whom Kureha-hime was received in this area of Ina and taught weaving techniques at the weaving hall. After her death in the 77th year of Emperor Nintoku, the Emperor himself built a shrine to honor her. The shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during the Battle of Arikawa in 1579, but the main hall was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1604. The very word "Gofuku" (silk fabrics/clothing) derives from the enshrined deity of this shrine, which preserves the origins of Japan's textile culture to this day.
