History

Sho-un-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Daitoku-ji school, located in Hiroo, Shibuya. It was founded in 1623 when Kuroda Tadayuki, second lord of the Chikuzen Fukuoka domain, established it to pray for the repose of his father Kuroda Nagamasa. Ryugaku Soryu of Kyoto's Daitoku-ji was invited as founding priest. Originally situated within the Kuroda domain residence in Akasaka, the temple was relocated to its present Hiroo site during the Kyoho era. Known as the greatest temple in Shibuya, it serves as the burial ground for many daimyo and samurai families connected to the Fukuoka domain. Its mountain name is Zuisen-zan.
