Gokurakuji is an ancient temple of the Shingon Ritsu school located on Gokurakuji Slope in Kamakura, founded in the mid-Kamakura period by the high priest Shojo. Shojo is known as an eminent monk who dedicated himself to relieving the poor and undertaking social welfare projects. Located near Enoden's Gokurakuji Station and cherished as a famous site for hydrangeas, this temple once boasted grand temple structures but now retains the vestiges of its former glory in quiet serenity.
