History

Byakko

Daishoin is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Nanzenji school, founded in Meireki 2 (1656) by Mouri Hidetsugu, the first lord of the Hagi Domain. Revered as the Mouri family temple, it enshrines the mausoleum of the daimyo of odd-numbered generations. Together with Tokoji in Hagi, it stands as one of the two Mouri clan burial grounds, its precincts lined with rows of stone lanterns in a solemn, magnificent display. It endures as a precious cultural heritage where samurai and Buddhist traditions converged during the Edo period.
