History

Byakko

Kojoji is a historic Nichiren sect temple of head temple rank located in Tsutsujigaoka, Miyagino Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, known by the mountain name Komyo-san. The temple's current name derives from the posthumous Buddhist name 'Kosho-in' of Lady Furi, wife of the second lord of the Sendai domain, Date Tadamune. The temple has changed its name over the centuries — from Daiseniji to Zenshoji and finally to Kojoji — flourishing under the patronage of the Date clan. Its grounds are beloved as a flower sanctuary, with cherry blossoms in spring and peonies and azaleas in early summer drawing visitors from across Sendai.
