History

Konpoji is an ancient Tendai sect temple located at the summit of Mt. Nonotake in Wakuya Town, Miyagi Prefecture. It was founded in 807 (the second year of Daido) when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined an eleven-faced Kannon bodhisattva brought from Kiyomizudera in Kyoto during his campaign to subdue the Emishi. Originally named Kirigakeyama Shofukuji, the temple was revitalized by the eminent monk Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) in 849, who renamed it Muizan Konpoji. It is the ninth temple of the Oshu Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage and one of the Seven Kannon of Oshu. The Kannondo Hall, rebuilt in 1851 and designated as a Miyagi Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property in 2019, is the largest surviving Edo-period Buddhist hall in the prefecture.
