History
Nyoirinji is a Jodo sect Buddhist temple on Mount Yoshino, Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture. Its mountain name is Tounoosan and its principal image is Nyoirin Kannon. During the Nanbokucho period, when Emperor Godaigo established his court at Yoshino, this temple served as his chokuganjo (imperially vowed temple). The Emperor passed away at Yoshino without returning to the capital, and his mausoleum, Tounoono Misasagi, rests directly behind the main hall. The temple also preserves a farewell poem carved with an arrowhead by Kusunoki Masatsura before his departure for the Battle of Shijo Nawate, making it a site deeply entwined with the history of the Nanbokucho era.
