History

Byakko

Koshoku-ji is a Jishu sect temple nestled in the quiet mountains of Junisho, Kamakura, founded in 1278 (Koan 1) with Ippen Shonin as the patron and Saku-a Shonin as the founding priest. The mountain name is Ganzozan and the hall name is Choshun-in. The principal image is the Amida Triad; the central Amida Nyorai figure is known as the Hooyaki Amida — the Cheek-Burning Amida — from a legend in which the statue burned the cheek of a thief who attempted to steal it. The temple serves as the seventh site on the Kamakura 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and the fifth on the Kamakura 24 Jizo Pilgrimage.
