It was founded by the fourth regent Hōjō Tsunetoki with Zen'a Yoshitada as the founding abbot, and has a long history of spreading the teachings of nembutsu. The spectacular view of Sagami Bay from the main hall is renowned as "Kamakura's finest sunset," with beauty evoking the Pure Land of Paradise.
