History

Byakko

Negishi Hachiman Jinja in Isogo Ward, Yokohama, is traditionally said to have been founded in 543 CE (the 4th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign). According to shrine legend, a divine image appeared from a golden light glowing in Negishi Bay and came ashore, whereupon village elders enshrined it. The current site was established by a relocation in 1766 (Meiwa 3), and the shrine was registered as a village shrine in 1875. It enshrines Ojin Tenno, Amaterasu Omikami, and Oyamazumi-no-kami, and has long served as the tutelary shrine of Negishi. The sacred grove behind the shrine has been selected as one of Kanagawa's 50 Beautiful Forests.
