Reiun-ji

Reiuji is the head temple of the Shingon Reiuji-ha sect, located in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Founded in 1691 by the monk Jogen Kakugen, it carries the mountain name Horinji and the hall name Daibishinin. The principal objects of worship are the Taizokai (Womb Realm) and Kongokai (Diamond Realm) manifestations of Dainichi Nyorai. The temple flourished during the Edo period as an important center of Shingon Buddhism, but suffered devastating losses of halls and cultural treasures in the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II air raids. Its Maitreya Mandala and Sixteen Arhats statues are designated National Important Cultural Properties.
