History

Byakko

Teppōzu Inari Jinja is an ancient shrine said to have been founded during the Jōgan era (859-877) of the Heian period. Originally situated on a small island in the sea, it took its present form through land reclamation during the Edo period, yet retains over 1000 years of history as a venerable Inari shrine. The name "Teppōzu" derives from the land's resemblance to a rifle. Enshrined in the commercial heart of Chuo Ward, it has been revered since the Edo period as a deity of commercial prosperity by countless merchants. Today it continues to serve as the guardian deity of the business district, drawing many salarymen and business executives to its grounds.
