History

Byakko

Teppozu Inari Jinja, located in Minato, Chuo Ward, Tokyo, is an ancient shrine founded in 841 (Jowa 8) of the Heian period, when residents of Ebara district enshrined it as their tutelary deity. The shrine relocated several times as the surrounding inlet was reclaimed, settling at its present site in Minato in 1624 (Genna 1). Positioned at the gateway to Edo's network of waterways, it gathered devoted worship from sailors throughout the country. In 1790 (Kansei 2), a Fujizuka mound was constructed within the grounds and remains the only Fujizuka in Chuo Ward. The shrine continues to serve as the guardian deity of central Tokyo's commercial district.
