History
Shiogama Jinja is the First Shrine of Mutsu Province and the most prestigious shrine in the Tohoku region. Its founding is said to trace back to the age of the gods, and it enshrines Shiotsuchiwojikami, Takemikazuchi, and Futsunushi. The grounds, famous for their Shiogama cherry blossoms, display beautiful pale pink blossoms in spring, a truly spectacular sight. Since ancient times, it has gathered devoted faith as the guardian shrine of Tohoku, and is particularly known as the protective kami of maritime safety, fishing, and salt manufacturing. A place visited by many worshippers from across the nation, it is a sacred site of great spiritual efficacy in Tohoku.
