History

Byakko

Tenneiji is a Soto Zen temple in Negabu, Ome City, Tokyo. Founded in the late Muromachi to early Sengoku period by Oishi Sadashige, with Tenneisoju of Kenchoji as its first head priest. The principal object of worship is Sho-Kannon, and the temple flourished as the family temple of the Oishi clan, a powerful family in Musashi Province. A stone five-ringed pagoda said to mark the Oishi grave remains on the grounds. During the Edo period, the shogunate granted the temple official landholding rights. Its bronze bell is a nationally important art object, and the temple grounds are a Tokyo Metropolitan historic site.
