Awa Koya Myoonin Temple in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, was founded in 1579 (Tensho 7) as a prayer temple of the Satomi clan. It is a branch temple of Myoonin on Mount Koya, originally established by Jokyo Hoin, the third son of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and remains under the direct control of Kongo-buji on Mount Koya. The temple received over 161 koku of land from the Satomi clan and later more than 75 koku of vermilion-sealed land from the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1895, a 88-stage mini-pilgrimage featuring 88 Daishi statues was established on the hill behind the main hall.
