History

Byakko

Gion Jinja, enshrined in Hososhima in Hyuga, has long been cherished as the protective deity of this port town. From the Edo period onward, Hososhima prospered as a busy harbor with active maritime traffic, and it has been devoutly worshipped by those praying for safety at sea and safe voyages. Gion is famous as a deity for warding off epidemics, but here the faith in its role as a protective deity of maritime safety runs particularly deep. True to its nature as a port town, fishermen and those engaged in maritime commerce have continued their visits through generations, and the shrine remains beloved by many.
