History

Byakko

Itayado Hachimangu Shrine was founded in 987 to enshrine Homudawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin) and Sugawara no Michizane as guardian deities. The place name Itayado is said to derive from a temporary shelter made of boards where Michizane rested on his way to Dazaifu. In 1907, Ikenomiya Shrine was merged. A keyhole-shaped stone burial chamber was discovered on the grounds in 1924. The Tobimachi Tenjinsha within the precinct enshrines the stump of a pine said to have flown from Kyoto in longing for Michizane. The shrine is affectionately known as the Yakujin-san of Itayado.
