History

Byakko

Soyuji, a Rinzai Zen temple of the Myoshinji school in Hida Takayama, was founded in 1632 as the family temple of Kanamori Kashige, lord of Takayama Castle. His son Kanamori Shigetori and brother Kanamori Shigekatsu established it, inviting the 92nd abbot of Myoshinji, Nanso Soan, to lead the temple. Known by its mountain name Shinryuzan, it is also celebrated as the place where Yamaoka Tesshu studied Zen. The main hall and bell tower are designated cultural properties of Takayama City.
