History

Byakko

Dairyuji is an ancient temple of the Soto Zen sect located on Atagoyama overlooking the streets of Takayama. Its history is long and has been cherished by local people. From the grounds situated halfway up the mountain, Takayama city spreads out in full view, and the beauty of the night view is particularly exquisite. The temple enshrines Atagogongen, known as the deity of fire prevention, and has long gathered faith for protection against fires. Ancient trees hundreds of years old flourish within the grounds, allowing visitors to feel nature's beauty throughout the seasons. The stone steps along the path to the temple are appreciated as part of the spiritual practice of purifying the mind.
