History

Chiyo Shrine, located in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, is a venerable shrine that has long served as the guardian of the Hikone region. Once ranked as a prefectural shrine (kensha) under the old shrine ranking system, it traces its origins to a Shinmei-sha enshrining a spirit from Ise Shrine. During the Edo period, the shrine received deep reverence from the Ii clan, lords of Hikone Domain, and was worshipped by samurai and commoners alike for blessings of good fortune and martial prowess. In the Meiji era, it was renamed Chiyo Shrine and continues to serve as a spiritual center for the local community. Ancient sacred trees stand within the grounds, creating a solemn atmosphere that has welcomed worshippers across the centuries.
