History

Byakko

Furouguu is a shrine situated on the banks of the Chikugo River in Okawa, Fukuoka, with Watatsumi-no-Mikoto (Watanabe no Mikoto) as its principal deity. The Azumi clan has served as the hereditary priests of this shrine for generations. Revered as the guardian of those who lived by the Chikugo River and the Ariake Sea — river boatmen and fishermen alike — the shrine has long been a center of faith for maritime safety and protection from water disasters. Its traditions and sacred rites have been faithfully passed down through the centuries.
