History
Funamiguu, enshrined on the banks of the Chikugo River in Okawa, is a sea deity shrine with Shoutokumei-no-Mikoto as its principal kami. As the name "Funamigi" suggests, the kami governs wind and waves, and has long been revered as the guardian deity of those engaged in river transport on the Chikugo River and fishing in the Ariake Sea. In this region blessed by the bounty of the Chikugo River and the grace of the Ariake Sea, gratitude to the water deity and prayers for safety continue unabated. Known for divine virtue that is calm like the river's flow, yet at times powerfully guides people forward.
