History

Byakko

Houman-ji, formally known as Risshu Hizanmikkyo-in Houman-ji, was a Risshu Buddhist temple in Shibushi, Kagoshima Prefecture, now designated a Kagoshima Prefectural Historic Site. It is said to have been founded during the Jinki era at the imperial request of Emperor Shomu. In 1316, a disciple of the monk Ninsho named Shingen Eiki rebuilt the temple and enshrined as its principal image a Nyoirin Kannon statue attributed to the master sculptor Unkei, brought from the Saidai-ji temple in Nara. Revered for miraculous efficacy in safe childbirth, the temple flourished as one of the Three Great Temples of Satsuma. It was abolished in the anti-Buddhist purges of 1869 and today only foundation stones and a restored garden remain.
