History

Byakko

Hyuga Myokokuji is a Nichiren sect temple located in Hososhima, Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kofukuzan, and it belongs to the Koto Hoen lineage. Founded in 1568 (Eiroku 11), the temple was established by the monk Nikkei, who is known for spreading Nichiren Buddhism throughout the Hyuga region. Hososhima flourished as a port town during the Edo period, and the temple drew deep devotion from those praying for safety at sea. It survived the Meiji-era separation of Buddhism and Shinto thanks to local support, continuing its role as a community anchor to this day.
