History

Yamato Okuniama Shrine, located in Minami-Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, is believed to have been established when the Yamato court extended its influence to Awaji Island, with the deity enshrined by transferring the tutelary god from Yamato-no-Okuniama Shrine (present-day Yamatojinja) in Yamato Province. The shrine was listed as an official shrine in 851 and elevated to the first rank in 859 according to the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku. Designated a meishin taisha in the Engishiki, it is also the second-ranking ichinomiya of Awaji Province. During the Edo period it received devotion from the Hachisuka clan, and today it continues to draw worshippers to its grand annual festival on April 1.
