History

Byakko

Funadama Jinja is a sea deity that has walked alongside Hakodate's history as a port town. From ancient times, it has gathered the faith of fishermen and sailors, and has been cherished as a shrine where prayers for safe seas and abundant catches are offered. Positioned on a high point overlooking Hakodate Harbor, it has continued to watch over the safety of vessels crossing the Tsugaru Strait. Together with Hakodate's development as a port town, it continues to be loved not only by those engaged in maritime and fishing industries, but also by the wider local community. Situated not far from a location with beautiful night views of Hakodate, it is a shrine visited by many pilgrims.
