History
Sapporo Suwa Jinja is a shrine created by invoking the divided spirit of Suwa Taisha from Shinshu. During the Meiji era's development of Sapporo, many people from Honshu moved to this land, and the shrine was established to honor their longing for their homeland and their desire for peace in this new frontier. Known as a martial deity, the god of Suwa became the spiritual support for people facing the hardship of pioneer work. The quiet grounds in a residential area of Higashi Ward serve as a sacred space that makes one forget the clamor of the city, and it continues to be loved by the local community.
