History

Byakko

Sumiyoshi-sama watches over the seas of Otaru! Founded by inviting Sumiyoshi Taisha from Osaka, it is the tutelary deity of port town Otaru. It enshrines the three Sumiyoshi deities who govern maritime safety, and since the Hokkaido development era, it has gathered the faith of sailors and merchants. Particularly during the time when Otaru flourished as Hokkaido's maritime gateway, many ship-related personnel came to pray for safe voyages. Even today, together with the history of Otaru Canal, it continues to be cherished by the community. A sacred place where one can feel the protection of the sea deity, together with the atmosphere of a port town.
