This shrine is the very embodiment of Hokkaido's history of development. It was established by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji in Meiji 2 (1869) as the guardian deity of development, progress, and security, enshrining Okuninushi no Mikoto, Onamuchi no Mikoto, and Sukunahikona no Mikoto. Originally called Sapporo Jinja, it was renamed Hokkaido Jingu in Showa 39 (1964) when Emperor Meiji was added to the enshrinement. The grounds, embraced by the rich nature of Maruyama, are renowned as a cherry blossom viewing spot and attract many visitors during spring. It continues to watch over Hokkaido's development together with the thoughts and wishes of the pioneers.
