History

Byakko

Sapporo Gokoku Jinja was established in 1879 (Meiji 12) to enshrine the spirits of Tondenhei (farmer-soldiers) who fell in the Satsuma Rebellion. Over the years, the shrine has enshrined those who gave their lives in subsequent conflicts, honoring their sacrifice and praying for lasting peace. In 1949, the deity of Taga Taisha was invited to the shrine, and in 1971 the deity of Yamahana Jinja was merged in — giving the shrine its present form of two halls: the main hall and the Taga-den. The shrine is also celebrated as one of Sapporo's finest cherry blossom sites, its grounds blooming each spring with quiet wishes for peace.
