History

Byakko

Makayaji is an ancient temple hidden deep in the mountains surrounding Lake Hamana, a place where the ordinary world seems to fall away. The name itself—Makaya, meaning 'a place of great mystery'—hints at the profound spiritual presence within. The Eleven-faced Kannon enshrined here represents the Buddha's ability to observe and guide all beings from multiple perspectives simultaneously. The practice here is rigorous, and those who enter must confront the deepest questions of their existence. From this high vantage point overlooking the lake, visitors experience their own smallness while simultaneously recognizing their connection to something infinitely greater.
