History
Shogenji is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Sakamoto, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, bearing the mountain name Hieizan. It is said to be built on the birthplace of Saicho (Dengyo Daishi), the founder of the Tendai school in Japan, dating back to the late Nara or early Heian period. The principal object of worship is the Eleven-faced Kannon. Within the temple grounds, visitors can find the well said to have been used for Saicho's first bath, and a hall dedicated to his mother. The temple continues to attract worshippers seeking safe childbirth.
