History

Byakko

Kiyomi-ji, formally named Kogosan Kiyomi Kokoku Zenji, is a Rinzai Myoshinji-school temple in Okitsu, Shimizu, Shizuoka. Founded according to temple tradition in the Nara period, it served as a Tendai temple at the Kiyomi Barrier during the Heian era. It was revived as a Zen temple in the Kamakura period and flourished under the patronage of Ashikaga Takauji and Imagawa Yoshimoto. Tokugawa Ieyasu — then the young hostage Matsudaira Takechiyo — studied here under abbot Taigen Sessai. During the Edo period, the temple hosted Korean and Ryukyuan diplomatic missions, and its grounds are now designated a National Historic Site as a Korean Tongsinsa site. The garden is a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty.
