History

Byakko

Tokutokuzan Sanbutsuji is an ancient temple boasting over a thousand years of history as a sacred site of mountain Buddhism. It is said to have been founded in 706 (Keiun 3) by Gyogo and later revived during the Heian period by Jikaku Daishi Ennin. Most famous is the inner sanctuary called "Nageiredō," built on a sheer cliff face, which is considered a miracle of Japanese architectural history. As a sacred site of Shugendō, climbing the steep mountain path itself is a form of practice. The beautiful buildings designated as National Treasures stand with the divine protection of the Buddha and kami, transcending a thousand years.
