History

Byakko

Wafukari Jinja is an ancient shrine enshrined in Moji overlooking the Kanmon Strait. "Wafukari" refers to cutting wakame seaweed, and since ancient times this shrine has been deeply connected with the blessings of the sea. It enshrines the three deities of Sumiyoshi and has long been revered as the guardian deity of maritime safety and sea transportation. Positioned at the Kanmon Strait, a crucial point in transportation, it is said that many sailors and travelers prayed for safety. Every year during the traditional New Year, the Wafukari sacred ritual is performed, in which priests enter the sea to harvest wakame, an ancient and graceful ritual for which the shrine is known.
