History

Onjoji, commonly known as "Mii-dera," is the head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect. According to tradition, it was founded to honor the memory of Prince Otomo, the son of Emperor Tenji. The bronze bell famous as the "Evening Bell of Mii" is said to be one of Japan's three greatest temple bells, and its tone continues to soothe people's hearts. Throughout its long history, though struck by warfare on numerous occasions, it has achieved restoration each time, standing as an indomitable sacred place.
