History
Hokomon Jinja, situated in Wakkanai at Japan's northernmost point, is truly a shrine that guards 'the North.' Established along with Hokkaido's development in the Meiji period, it has been a source of spiritual support for people living in an extremely harsh natural environment. As its name 'Hokomon' (Northern Gate) indicates, it has gathered the faith of fishermen and pioneers as the shrine guarding Japan's northernmost gateway. Positioned to overlook the Soya Strait, near the Russian border, it holds special geographical significance. A brave shrine of a sacred domain that continues to protect life in the severe northern climate and pray for peace in the northern regions.
