History

Toyotari Shrine stands in the Zenibako district of Otaru, formerly ranked as a son-sha (village shrine). It enshrines a deity of abundance and prosperity, watching over families seeking harmony and fortune. Within the precinct, beside the war memorial, rests the remains of a sea mine laid by Russian forces during the Russo-Japanese War. Drifting ashore around 1907 and subsequently deactivated, it was later donated to the shrine as a historical artifact. The shrine continues its quiet vigil beside the Sea of Japan.
