History

Tocho-ji is the head temple of the Shingon Buddhism Kyushu Sectarian Association, known as the temple first established in Japan by Kobo Daishi Kukai. Since its founding in the early Heian period, it has served as a pillar of support for the people of Hakata for over 1,200 years. The precinct houses the Fukuoka Daibutsu, one of Japan's largest wooden seated Buddha statues, welcoming many worshippers. This ancient temple, transmitting the teachings of Kobo Daishi to the present day and continuing to watch over the city of Hakata, can truly be called the center of Kyushu Buddhist culture.
