History

Daigakuin is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture, with Shakyamuni Buddha as its principal image. The temple served as a place of prayer for the Arisugawa-no-miya imperial family. Within the grounds rest the graves of Satomi Tadayoshi, dispossessed in the early Edo period, and eight loyal retainers known as the Nanso Hakkeshi who followed their lord in death. The temple is also said to have inspired the classic novel Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, making it a sacred site where history and literature converge.
