Ikime Jinja is affectionately known as "Ikime-san" and is renowned throughout Japan as a shrine dedicated to the protection of the eyes. True to its name, it has long been venerated as a guardian deity of "living sight," drawing devoted believers seeking treatment for eye diseases and improvement of vision. Particularly since the Edo period, the miraculous efficacy of the shrine in healing eye ailments became widely known, and it began attracting numerous visitors not only from various parts of Kyushu but also from distant regions. Even in modern times, the shrine continues to be cherished across generations, with people who strain their eyes through computer and smartphone use coming to pray for eye health.
