History

Byakko

Konsho-ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Aranbari, Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture. Its mountain name is Mt. Konsho. According to tradition, it was founded during the Nara period by the eminent priest Ryoben, at the behest of Emperor Shomu. Formerly known as Dai Bodai-ji, it flourished as a major center of Buddhism in the Konan region. Though the temple suffered destruction through repeated fires over the centuries, it was rebuilt each time through the deep faith of local devotees, preserving its flame of dharma to this day. The principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha.
