History

Byakko

Hiyoshi Tosho-gu is one of the Tosho-gu shrines enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu, established in the early Edo period as a shrine of distinguished rank. Situated at the foot of Mount Hiei in a spiritually auspicious location, it was built to pray for the prosperity of the Tokugawa clan and peace under heaven. It is a historic shrine that was built ahead of the Nikko Tosho-gu. The shrine halls, adorned with beautiful carvings, are masterpieces of craftsmanship representing the finest techniques of artisans of that era. In the serene mountain-foot setting, the spirit of Ieyasu rests peacefully and hears the wishes of worshippers. Beloved as Gongen-sama, it continues to gather the faith of many people as a sacred place.
