History

Byakko

Ryujouin Temple, located in Yorishima, Asakuchi City, Okayama Prefecture, was founded in 838 CE (5th year of Jowa) by the revered priest Jikaku Daishi Ennin, the second abbot of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. In 1666, during the domain reform of Okayama lord Ikeda Mitsumasa, eleven of the twelve surrounding sub-temples were destroyed and consolidated into this main temple. In 1681, the priest Shinryo inherited the dharma lineage, relocated to the current site, and renamed it Ryujouin. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1759. The temple garden is designated a prefectural scenic spot, and the temple preserves numerous cultural treasures including an Amida Nyorai standing statue.
