History
Shiiba Itsukushima Jinja is a shrine invited from the Itsukushima Jinja of Miyajima. Shiiba Village is famous as a refuge village for the Heike clan, and this shrine may also have deep connections to that history. The deity of Itsukushima is known as the god of the sea and the arts, a goddess who presides over beauty and elegance. It is interesting that a sea deity is enshrined in the mountainous region of Shiiba. It was surely built with thoughts of a distant homeland. Even now, it must stand with a divine presence in the quiet mountain valleys, serving as a source of strength for the village people.
