Shinbashira Jinja is enshrined in the central part of Miyakonojo and is one of the most prominent large shrines in southern Kyushu. Its history is ancient, and according to tradition, it was founded during the Three Korean Campaign of Empress Jingu. As the guardian deity of the Miyakonojo Basin, it has long gathered the faith of the people. It was particularly revered by the Shimazu Clan and prospered as the tutelary deity of the Miyakonojo Shimazu family. Numerous subsidiary shrines are scattered throughout the expansive grounds, and it is filled with worshippers seeking various blessings. Known affectionately as "Shinbashira-san" by locals, it continues to be cherished by many as a spiritual pillar of the region.
